Overview

Impetigo is a common, contagious bacterial skin infection that causes sores or blisters, often around the nose and mouth. It's most common in young children but can affect anyone.

Common symptoms

• Red sores that quickly burst and form a golden-brown crust
• Itching
• Sores that spread to nearby skin

What to expect

Your pharmacist will look at the affected skin, check how widespread it is, and advise on treatment — usually a cream or, if needed, antibiotics. They'll also cover how to stop it spreading to others.
