Shingles

Overview

Shingles is caused by the same virus as chickenpox reactivating, usually as a painful, blistering rash on one side of the body. Treatment works best when started early — ideally within 72 hours of the rash appearing.

Common symptoms

• Burning, tingling or painful skin, often before a rash appears
• A blistering rash, usually on one side of the body only
• Sometimes fever or feeling unwell

What to expect

Your pharmacist will check where the rash is and how long you've had it, since antiviral treatment is most effective started early. Rashes near the eye or ear need urgent same-day referral rather than this pathway.
